SAP Identity Management

Why SAP Identity Management?

SAP’s ID management software lets you grant and manage user access to applications – securely and efficiently.

The current release, version 8.0 (along with SAP Single Sign-On 3.0) will continue be supported in mainstream maintenance until end of 2027.

It helps reduce operational cost in complex on-premise environments, and can be extended to SAP Cloud Platform by connecting with SAP Cloud Identity Services.

Solution Insight:

With Digital Transformation driving an organisation’s adoption of more systems and applications, how does Identity Management solve the problem of managing appropriate user access for changing employees and external workers?

The average employee has between 20-40 user accounts for different business systems and applications. This not only poses a significant problem for the end user, but also for functions such as IT and HR, whenever an employee or external worker changes jobs or leaves the organisation. Identity Management resolves this disjointed Joiner / Mover / Leaver process and results in users being provided the right access at the right time, shifting the manual burden away from IT and improving security by deprovisioning access quickly once the user has left the organisation.

Whenever we meet a new client and we ask how they provision users – if they reply “manually” there’s usually a big ‘sigh’ that follows! Adding new users, deprovisioning users, moving them to new positions – it can be a really slow process, one that’s frustrating for the end user, and one that impacts productivity as well as costs.

Typically there are three business drivers for selecting SAP Identity Management. As I said, the first is Operating costs, labour intensive provisioning, approvals, password resets. The second driver is Organisational Change, while a third driver will typically be around Regulations and Compliance, especially when it comes to audit and keeping records of approvals, timely deprovisioning and demonstrating control over Joiner/Mover/Leaver processes. The bigger the organisation, the harder it becomes.”
