SAP RAM & SAP Signavio – a perfect marriage
Integration Value
by Dr Neil Patrick – Director Client Services @ Winterhawk
Did you know SAP Risk and Assurance Management (RAM) and SAP Signavio Process Manager have an automated technical integration?
This has significant business value add potential, as I have blogged about before. Here’s why:
Managing controls in a harmonized way across a business is essential to achieving and staying compliant. This is to protect the value of the business. But often more important is to add to the value of the business. We can do this by running controls as “frictionless” in-process checks on actual in-situ ERP data for key front office business activities, supporting financial assurance, agility, and resilience for the modern digital first customer.
For this concept to work and be cost-effective, controls need to be well documented and appropriate to actual business process flows – as opposed to an original process flow design – as well as assigned to the relevant process steps within the processes. It works even better if it can be automated. And easily visualised.
Furthermore, businesses today are facing a world of constant change from internal factors and external factors, whether that is a planned change or unexpected change. One of the interfaces where this impacts the business directly and tangibly is in processes and data (especially crown jewels in your ERP system). Luckily, this can be documented, quantified, assessed, and reported on via controls over data, processes and risks.
Which is where the integration between SAP Risk and Assurance Management and SAP Signavio Process Manager is so valuable.
SAP Risk and Assurance Management (as part of SAP’s GRC and Security solution suite) is a risk and internal controls execution, monitoring, reporting and management solution, running on SAP Business Technology Platform. It provides a centralized view across SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private and Public Editions and SAP ECC for risk exposure, internal control status and adequacy.
While
SAP Signavio Process Manager (as part of Signavio’s Process Transformation Suite) is an intuitive and comprehensive modelling platform that captures, unifies, and maintains process models. It supports multiple use cases such as process excellence, digital transformation, process compliance, and process education.
When Combined :
The two solutions have an automated integration synchronizing processes, risks and controls. This allows customers to take full advantage of what each solution is so good at individually, and join them up so that the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts.
Synchronizing business process and assurance worlds:
- Protects the business during normal operations, and change
- Provides transparency into where risks and controls fit in the business, and their impact, to grow and get stronger from volatility
- Ensures the exact same process, risk and control view for business operations & assurance functions, also helping deal with complexity
- Gives a visual and in depth view of risks, and their relationship to high materiality processes
- Drives decisions based on consistent, up to date & accurate control effectiveness data within the context of key processes, also helping deal with ambiguity and uncertainty
- Dramatically increases and improves the quality and precision of automation, highlighting process anomalies and delays
- Increases digitization of processes, risks and controls (digital twin concept) leading to better business & compliance engagement, and improved compliance
- Reduces errors & manual work, rationalizes risks and controls leading to significant cost efficiencies and lower ‘cost of compliance’
- Reduces cost and impact of internal and external audit

I should note that for the last 5 years until joining Winterhawk I have been SAP’s Solution Manager for SAP Risk and Assurance Management (SAP Financial Compliance Management when it was first released). I was instrumental in bringing it to market and helping it grow to the innovative solution it is today. I am still passionate about the solution, and I’m very pleased to now be at Winterhawk adding client value to deploying the solution.
