Drop Camp
Flat Tops Wilderness • Western Colorado Drop Camps

“Our drop camp hunt was a success! Your country, service, and camps makes wilderness hunting on our own a great experience.”

- Tyler Rees

High Country Drop Camps

One of our specialties are Drop Camps, because we understand that many experienced hunters enjoy the challenge of hunting elk and deer on their own. They are knowledgeable hunters who are comfortable in the high country regardless of the weather. For these hunters, Winterhawk's high country drop camps are a perfect fit.

Winterhawk's drop camps are located in some of the finest elk and deer producing areas of the Flat Tops Wilderness and White River National Forest. They are accessible by horseback only and, depending on the camp, are one to four hours ride from base camp.

The country consists of small parks, rolling meadows, and stands of aspen with spruce pockets that run up to heavy dark timber near the timberline. Drop Camps are located from 9,000 to 11,500 feet to accommodate both early and late season hunters.

Drop camps include large wall tents with floors, rain fly, wood stove for heating your tent, L.P. hotplate for cooking, cots, foam pads, Coleman lanterns, fuel, ax, bow saw, aluminum pack frame and latrine. Water is supplied and firewood is near each camp. A Motorola two-way radio provides 24 hour communication with base camp for safety, and for calling when you have game to be packed out. Hunters are responsible for their food, cooking, firewood cutting, other camp chores, and field dressing and quartering game.

DROP CAMP INFORMATION

Personal gear (clothes, boots, hunting equipment, etc.) must not exceed 70 pounds and should be packed in one standard size army-style duffle bag. Food should not exceed 60 pounds per person. We must adhere to these restrictions without exception.

DELUXE DROP CAMPS

Our deluxe drop camps are perfect for the group that would rather spend all their time hunting. We supply the food, full-time cook, and camp caretaker. They prepare meals, cut firewood and maintain the camp. Food is hearty, back-country, home-cooked and plentiful. Equipment and camp set-up is similar to our regular drop camps except there is a separate tent for the cook and caretaker. This is still an unguided camp, and the cook and caretaker duties are limited as described. Only one deluxe camp is run per hunt and it is available on a first-come first-served basis.  We  require a minimum of 6 hunters in these deluxe drop camps.

ATTENTION: Archery drop camp hunt dates shown above are somewhat flexible. We run 8 archery drop camps at the same time, so the pack in and pack out dates can vary 1-3 days either way at the beginning or end of your hunt. We simply cannot pack in and pack out all 8 camps the same day. This procedure may also help you get the exact dates you desire. These are 8-day trips with 6 full days of hunting. If you would like additional days of hunting, please let us know.  Sometimes, we can schedule camps to get you additional days of hunting at no additional cost. Please call to discuss the dates and number of hunting dates you want.

*  The 3rd archery drop camp dates correspond with the muzzleloader drop camp dates.  The muzzleloader season runs from Sept 11-19.  Sometimes archery hunters try to avoid hunting at the same time that muzzleloader hunters are hunting.

New for 2010

Muzzleloading Elk Licenses:
"Statewide" muzzleloading licenses are no longer available in 2010. All muzzleloading elk licenses are valid in specific Game Management Units (GMUs) or Data Analysis Units (DAUs) only.  Either-sex licenses are also available in specific units. This change should make it easier to draw muzzleloader elk licenses in GMU 25 and 26. Instead of needing 2 or 3 Preference Points to draw an elk license, you should be able to draw a license with only 1 or 2 Preference Points. All Muzzleloader elk Licenses are either-sex licenses for 2010.

If your group is interested in hunting more than 6 days, give us a call to discuss.  We have some flexibility in this season, and may be able to provide additional hunting days.

* Indicates Elk Only Season, with licenses available on a Drawing Basis.

First Rifle Season:  For many years our first rifle season was the most popular season, and very successful.  Because it was so successful, it drew more hunters to the field than the 2nd or 3rd rifle seasons.  In an attempt to even out the number of hunters in the field each season, the Colorado Division of Wildlife put the 1st rifle season licenses on a drawing.  Now, our first rifle season is not as crowded, and our hunters are still enjoying a very successful hunt.  The best news is that although the tags are on a drawing, the success rate in getting the license is very high.  According to the Colorado DOW, in our units the success rate in 2007 for hunters with no preference points was 92%.  Although the licenses are on a drawing,  your chances of successfully drawing a license is very high, over 90%.  So please do not let the drawing scare you away from the first rifle season.   The applications for first rifle season licenses have an application deadline of April 1st.  Feel free to give us a call for more information.
